Exploring How Plants Work

The Leaf Zoom Kit is a ready-to-teach lesson plan suitable for middle phase (P4/5/6), which is delivered by teachers in their classrooms across four-weeks.

Materials, lesson plan and assessments for 25-30 pupils working in 10-groups are provided. Learning is centred around biology, parts of a plant and how plants grow, explaining the need for water, sunlight and air. Each kit includes (i) a lesson (video, text) and teachers’ manual, (ii) 3D interactive paper leaf model resource, (iii) water-transport experiment, and (iv) pupil worksheets. Learning outcomes include knowledge of biology, knowledge of new biological terms, macro- and microscopic organisation of plants, plants’ role in food chain, and plant-climate interactions affecting water transport in plant growth.

What pupils will learn

Across four structured lessons, pupils will:
  • How plants breathe and exchange gases

  • Explore how water and nutrients move through plants

  • Understand how leaf structure supports plant function

  • Investigate how plants respond to their environment

  • Use scientific vocabulary to observe, explain, and reflect

The lessons encourage curiosity and questioning, while reinforcing key vocabulary and concepts from the primary science curriculum.

What’s included

Kit supports 25–30 pupils working in groups:

  • A four-week, curriculum-mapped lesson plan
  • Interactive teaching resources for whole-class exploration
  • Pupil worksheets and activities
  • Built-in opportunities for assessment and reflection
  • Guidance for facilitating group discussion

All resources are designed to be practical, engaging, and easy to use within a typical classroom setting.

How the lessons work

Each week builds on the last, gradually deepening pupils’ understanding:

  • Introducing plant structures – observing leaves closely and linking form to function
  • Breathing and gas exchange – exploring how plants interact with air
  • Water and nutrients – understanding transport and growth
  • Plants and their environment – investigating responses to changing conditions

Activities are enquiry-based and encourage pupils to make predictions, record observations, and explain their thinking.

Curriculum-aligned and classroom-ready

Leaf-Zoom is fully mapped to the primary science curriculum and can be used as a standalone unit or alongside wider topics on plants and living things. It requires minimal preparation and is suitable for mixed-ability classrooms.
